Home & Celebrations: A Budget Diwali Makeover

Living in a metro city has its perks, fast-paced life, endless food options, and the buzz of opportunity. But when it comes to Diwali, the dream of a freshly painted home or a grand makeover often hits a wall, literally! If you're in a rented space, chances are your landlord isn’t too keen on structural changes, and between work deadlines and city chaos, painting the house is just not happening.
But who says you need a paintbrush to bring in the festive vibe? This Diwali, let your soft furnishings do the heavy lifting. Start with your living room & swap out your tired cushions for vibrant covers in rich textures like silk, velvet, or cotton. Go for jewel tones like maroon, emerald, turquoise and gold to instantly dial up the festive feels.
In the dining area, ditch the dull and bring in a bold table runner or quirky tablecloth. Layer it with beaded or embroidered placemats, and edge plain fabrics with lace or brocade for that extra sparkle. Even old bedlinen can be upcycled into table covers, budget-friendly and beautiful.
For the bedroom, switch to sheets with festive motifs like paisleys or florals. Add a rich throw blanket and a few accent pillows with embroidery or patchwork. It’s cosy, celebratory, and doesn’t cost a bomb.
And if your walls are looking a little too lived-in, skip the paint. Hang torans, fairy lights, or fabric wall art. Brighten corners with rangoli made from petals or coloured powders. A deep clean and declutter will make everything feel fresh and welcoming.
So even if your landlord says “no paint” and your budget says “no splurge,” your home can still say “Happy Diwali!” with just a few cushions, covers, and a whole lot of creativity 😊
